Incredible 17th century, dated 1631 along border and reads "SANCE ME FECIT SANCTVS AROMATARID GIOSEPPI SPATARN" meaning SANCE MADE ME THE SAINTS AROMATARID OF JOSEPH SPATARN bronze mortar most likely belonging to a monastery. Appears to have been hinged from the side hoop allowing much easier menas to facilitate emptying due to its weight (approx 272lbs). Seated on recent vintage Lucite base for displays. See photos for details. Measuring approx 13" tall x 17" diameter.
