Lot 67:
Circa 1870-80 Renaissance Revival Carved Figural Marble Top Parlor Table
Description
An exceptional Continental or American, circa 1870-1880 hand-carved walnut parlor table featuring a highly articulated architectural structure. The table is surmounted by a serpentine-contoured white Carrara marble top with elegant scalloped edges. The pierced-carved apron is heavily ornamented with scrolling acanthus leaves, pierced medallions, and central stylized scallop shell motif. Each corner corner-block features stylized floral rosettes, which transition into four stunningly executed full figure caryatid legs. The classical female figures are draped in flowing robes, rendered in high relief with arms raised to support the tables capital. The caryatids terminate at a heavily carved, sweeping X-form stretcher base adorned with matching foliate scrollwork, converging at a highly pronounced, central gadrooned finial. The piece rest upon traditional turned peg feet. A true testament to late 19th century master craftsmanship, blending classical architecture with high Victorian theatricality.
