Description
Late 19th century carved white marble bust depicting a young sailor boy or fisher boy attire. The figure is captured with a subtle, expressive facial expression, detailed curly hair and a characteristic soft cap tilted slightly to one side. He wears a collared shirt adorned with a prominently sculpted bow at the chest. The bust is raised on a classic integral turned marble socle base. The subject is closely related to the celebrated Neapolitan fisher boy themes popularized by French master Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) and his contemporaries during the Romantic and Realist movements. Measuring approx. 21 1/4" tall. In good age appropriate condition with two chips to collar and appears to be missing cigarette, see photos.
