William Baptiste Baird (American, 1847-1917) "A Forest Stream at Sunset" Oil on Board
Description
Born in Chicago, William Baptiste Baird spent the majority of his prolific career in France, studying under Adolphe Yvon at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon between 1872 and 1899, While widely celebrated for his luminous, pastoral Barbizon-school depictions of French farmyards and livestock, Baird occasionally turned his meticulous eye to the quiet solitude of the changing seasons. The present work depicts a serene, snow covered forest landscape bisected by a gently winding river. Baird’s characteristic mastery of light is on full display here, the low winter sun cast a warm, golden amber hue across the sky, heavily reflecting off the calm water’s surface and stark snowbanks. In the background, two rustic cabins sit nestled among the bare, towering trees, imparting a poignant sense of shelter and quiet human presence within the vast wilderness, capturing the crisp, atmospheric chill of a winter at dusk. TheÊpaintingÊis housed in a deeply carved period correct giltwood frame. Measuring approx. 21.25" tall by 25.5" wide. In good age appropriate condition with areas of losses to frame corners, see photos.
