ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) for production of TRADGIQUE HISOIRE O’HAMLET PRINCE OF DANEMWARK Imp. F. Champenois, Paris “The French adaptors of Shakespeare’s play, Eugène Morand and Marcel Schwob, prepared this version for Sarah Bernhardt, which was presented in her theater in May of 1899. Mucha’s design shows Sarah in the role of Hamlet, one of several male roles she essayed. The lower panel shows Ophelia in the repose of death, and behind Hamlet is a nocturnal scene at Elsinore Castle. Framed under glass and measuring approx 56" tall x 21" wide overall. Obvious loss along bottom edge as shown, and a few pin hole where likely was displayed in a theater, see photos
