Lot 108:
19th Century Continental School Alpine Landscape Oil on Canvas 44" w.
Description
Large 19th century Continental School oil on canvas painting depicting a romanticized panoramic alpine landscape. Switzerland Landscape painting.Ê The composition features a serene lake nestled between dramatic mountain peaks, framed by dense evergreen and deciduous foliage in the foreground. Small figures with sheep, horses and an ox-drawn cart crossing bridge over waterfall are finely rendered along the shoreline path, characteristic of Romantic-era pastoral subjects. The work is housed in its highly ornamental, period correct giltwood and composition frame. The frame features prominent acanthus leaf corner flourishes, a stippled or textured liner and a striking molded branch-and-twig outer motif rails. Measuring approx. 36.25" tall by 44" wide by 4.5" deep. In good age appropriate condition with some losses to gilt finishing and crackling consistent with age, see photos.
