Lot 112:
Pierre Marius Montagne (French, 1828-1879) "Seated Mercury" Bronze 24.5"
Description
A finely cast and beautifully patinated bronze figure of "Mercure au Repos" (Mercury at Rest or Mercury Seated) after celebrated French sculpture Pierre Marius Montagne (1828-1879). The Roman messenger god is depicted in a moment of contemplative repose, seated upon a tree stump with his legs crossed. He wears his signature winged petasos (cap) nestled within tight, classical curls. The figure exhibits excellent anatomical precision, capturing fluid muscular definition and a subtle, introspective facial expression characteristic of 19th century French romantic classicism. The sculpture rests on an integrated naturalistic circular base. Measuring approx. 24.5" tall. In good age appropriate condition with no breaks, damage or repairs noted, see photos.
