Lot 131:
Circa 1890 Black Forest Carved Wooden Bear Whip Hook Swiss-German
Description
An exceptionally fine anthropomorphic figural whip hook, hand carved from a dense single block of walnut or linden wood. This example of late 19th century Swiss-German craftsmanship features a standing bear rendered with exquisite detail in period attire, complete with puffy sleeves, a buttoned vest waistcoat, tailored breeches and cigar. The whimsical figure is depicted holding a shallow tray in his left paw, corded sash draped across torso and a wooden bucket tucked under his right arm. The lower portion seamlessly integrates a pair of polish natural animal horns curving upward designed to hold riding whips, crops, or light outerwear. Masterfully facial details including both black glass eyes, flowing fur and a mouth full of teeth clamped down on a cigar. Measuring approx.12" tall. In good age appropriate condition with no repairs noted, see photos.
