Description
Late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period, circa late 19th to early 20th century. Highly unusual and scarce hand carved open face relief wall sconce panel featuring a dramatic figural representation, likely depicting an immortal character. The bearded figure is modeled with and expressive, open-mouthed smile, wearing a traditional soft cap and holding an integrated opium floral motif candle pricket platform. The panel incorporates a unique articulated mechanical design, featuring a hinged right-side block with an extended carved fist. The arm is secured via two flush-mounted iron butterfly hinges, designed to pivot for theatrical or interactive display. The reverse features a dark lacquered finish, with and early paper collection or inventory label. Traces of traditional red gesso under-primer are visible beneath the aged patina. Measuring approx. 20.25" tall by 13" wide with swing arm protruding 7". In age appropriate condition with signs of age, finish losses and weathering, see photos.
