Lot 193:
Description
Originally drawn in 1884 as a program design for a high school alumni gala in Nantes, the work brilliantly stitches together the iconic themes of Degas’ career. It features an orchestra pit with a musician, a graceful ballet dancer in mid-leap, and a quiet harbor scene with sailboats in lower right corner.Ê This specific print is a historic posthumous impression pulled directly from Degas’ original copper plate after it was formally "canceled" (marked by the artist or estate to prevent duplicate original editions). These authorized canceled-plate editions were famously published in Paris around 1919 by legendary art dealer Ambroise Vollard, offering collectors a rare opportunity to own a piece of art printed from the actual plate touched by Degas’ hand. Measuring approx. 18" tall by 20.5" wide, 10.25" tall by 12.75" wide sight size. In good age appropriate condition with water stain to frame cloth, see photos.
