Lot 22:
John Henry Boel (British, Active 1884-1922) "Cottage by River Bank" Oil on Canvas
Description
John Henry Boel was a highly prolific British artist of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of the British countryside, rustic villages and rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands. Art historians widely known pseudonym utilized by the popular landscape painter Francis E. Jamieson (1885-1955), a common practice among late 19th century artists looking to fulfill demands from competing commercial galleries.Ê Dating to 1899, this is a prime example of Boel’s peak period of output. The work showcases his characteristic mastery of soft, naturalistic light, a finely rendered cloudy sky, and rich tonal foliage. The idyllic scene captures a quintessential pastoral narrative, featuring a hidden cottage nestled beside a sweeping riverbank and a meandering walk path. The painting is housed in it’s period -appropriate "swept" or "rococo-style" layered wood, molded gesso gold gilt frame, with open work cartouches adorned with stylized acanthus leaf and scrollwork. Measuring approx. 31.5" tall by 49.25" wide. In good age appropriate complete condition with a couple small frame chips and repair to lower left corner scrollwork, see photos.
