Description
An exceptional, vibrant mid 19th century Pennsylvania Dutch folk art frakturÊbookplate (Vorschrift or Buchlein-Schlid), executed in ink and watercolor on paper, "This little book belongs to Garold Palmer, December 21st, 1848". The composition is centered around a prominent, bold pink heart enclosing beautifully precise German Gothic script (Fraktur lettering). Emerging from the center top of the heart is a highly stylized tree-of-life motif. It features symmetrical green foliage, scrolling yellow and black accents, and an open, geometric four petal blossom in a striking black and pink palette. The base is anchored by a formal black-and-pink botanical spray flanked by intricate, sweeping calligraphic ribbon flourishes. The piece demonstrates the transition of the community’s dialect in mid 19th century America, noticeably utilizing the English spelling of "December" alongside standard German grammar "Dieses Buchlein gehort". Housed in an attractive, period appropriate hand-grained or stencil-painted wooden frame with geometric corner blocks. Measuring approx. 10.75" tall by 9" wide. In good age appropriate condition, see photos.
