Description
Preserved example of early 19th century Pennsylvania German American folk art fraktur. The work features a beautifully balanced symmetrical composition featuring two hand-drawn, watercolor birds resting upon stylized floral branches flanking a central tulip motif. Beneath the central vignette, the piece showcases prominent Fraktur and Kurrent German script lettering executed in a red and black ink. The script proclaims the identity and spiritual conviction of the maker or recipient, translated to; "Johanes Schmidt is my name – In Heaven is my beloved Fatherland". Directly beneath the verse, the piece is cleanly signed and dated 1806, in a secondary red ink. Secured under glass in a simple, deep set primitive walnut frame. Measuring approx. 7" tall by 9" wide. In good age appropriate condition, see photos.
