Description
Great early American 18th century woven ash splint checkerboard ladder back armchair. New England or Delaware Valley region features four graduated, hand-scraped arched horizontal slats meeting slender turned stiles, terminating in historic turned finials. Gently down slanted, round armrests are supported by simple turned front posts, terminating in a woven ash splint seat in a traditional checkerboard pattern. The lower base configured with double-rung side stretchers and boldly turned ring-and-bulb double front stretcher, raised on curved wooden rocking rails. In good age appropriate condition, appears the top slat may have split at lower half at some earlier point, but was refinished and sealed, see photos.
