Lot 237:
19th c. Neoclassical Italian Climbing Putti Pedestals
Description
These pedestals showcase elements of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, which were popular during the 19th century. Carved giltwood, likely pine with gesso. Italian "climbing putti" pedestals from the 19th century are decorative stands featuring carved figures of putti. Measuring approx 46" h x 17" w x 18" d. Some light crazing to gesso as shown, overall good condition, see photos. Putti are typically depicted as chubby, nude, winged children, and they are often associated with classical themes of love, innocence, and nature. While sometimes confused with cherubs (who represent angels in Christian theology), putti can symbolize a wider range of emotions and concepts.
