Lot 88:
Antonio Rose (European, 1848-1918) "Torrent Switzerland" Landscape Oil on Canvas
Description
An impressive and finely rendered late 19th century oil on canvas painting depicting a dramatic Alpine river valley, bearing the signature of European landscape artist Antonio Rose in lower left corner. The composition captures a rushing mountain torrent tumbling over a bed of smooth, weathered boulders, with white water expertly highlighted to convey rapid movement. The foreground gives way to a rugged dirt pathway winding along a rocky bank, framed by dense evergreen forests and hints or early autumn foliage on the right. In the far distance, majestic mountain peaks are enveloped in a soft, atmospheric haze under a partly cloudy blue sky, exemplifying the European romantic landscape tradition. The artwork is housed in it’s original, exceptionally ornate, heavy gilt-gesso sweep frame. The frames features deep-profile molding adorned with intricate floral rosettes, layered bead-on-reel borders, and highly stylized acanthus leaf corners that dramatically enhance the presentation of the canvas. Measuring approx. 28.5" tall by 36.75" wide by 3" deep. In good age appropriate condition with small areas of gilt losses consistent with age, see photos.
