Description
A finely cast early 20th century bronze horizontal sundial by the accomplished Boston artist Lucy Currier Richards (Active 1906-1917). Stamped along round base edge ROMAN BRONZE WORKS as shown. Lucy who studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the AcademieÊJulian in Paris. She is highly regarded for her elegant Art Nouveau and early Art Deco figures, fountains and decorative garden pieces. Her most famous historic commission is the iconic Putter Boy" (or Golf Lad)sundial sculpture created for the Pinehurst Resort in 1912. The piece depicts a classically rendered, seated young female beauty positioned in quiet contemplation beside a triangular gnomon, extending a single finger toward a delicate bronze butterfly resting at its peak. The circular base features beautifully incised, radiating lines marking the hours. The sculpture boasts a rich deep brown variegated patina, highlighting the crisp casting fidelity achieved by the famed Roman Bronze Works foundry of New York, which her works were achieved. Measuring approx. 14.5" tall by 14" diameter. In very good condition with no breaks or repairs noted, see photos.
