Lot 116:
Old Master "Saint Francis in Prayer" Attr. (Guido Reni, Italian, 1575-1642) 62.25"
Description
An early impressive, large and emotionally charged Baroque period composition depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in Prayer with Two Angels, depicting a moment of profound spiritual ecstasy, likely 17th or 18th century, has a stamp on back of canvas B.H.L. 1887, which could represent initials of a prominent historic collector or estate that acquired or cataloged the piece. The saint is rendered kneeling within a somber, rocky landscape, skull on shelf with rosary, and his hands tightly clasped in fervent prayer. Appears to have possibly been cut down from a larger painting of the entire scene original masterpiece with Saint Francis looking towards two angels, which may have been damaged somewhere through the centuries. Measuring approx. 62.25" tall by 43.75" wide. In age appropriate condition with signs of age, see photos.
