Description
Impressive dark brown patinated bronze figure realistically cast as the Carthaginian general standing in stylized Roman-style armor, a draped in sweeping cape, holding a Roman legionary standard turned downward toward the earth, explicitly marked with "S.P.Q.R." (Senatus Populusque Romanus) symbolizing the crushing defeat and humiliation of the Roman Republic, while he stands victoriously beside a decorative urn, counting the gold rings taken from fallen Roman Knights following the Battle of Cannae. Cast after the monumental marble sculpture executed by Sebastien Slodtz (Flemish, 1655-1726)Êbetween 1687 and 1704 for the gardens at Versailles, now housed in the Musee du Louvre.
